Maverick felt like Melody had been sleeping forever. Sure, he was being dramatic, but he just couldn’t help himself. She had shot him down and it hurt his damn feelings. Sulking and waiting for her to wake up was all he seemed capable of doing.

His cell phone ringing pulled him out of his self-imposed funk, and he grabbed it from the table and answered it.

“Yeah,” he growled into the phone.

“Well, you sound grumpier than usual,” Steel said. “Trouble in paradise?” There was no way that he’d admit to his brother that he had guessed correctly. The last thing he needed was for his brother to give him shit about Melody turning down his marriage proposal after he went and picked up the ring and everything.

“Shut the fuck up and tell me why you called me,” Mav grumbled.

“Which is it?” Steel asked. “Do you want me to shut the fuck up or tell you why I called?”

“Stop being a smart ass and just tell me,” Maverick ordered.

“Fine, Melody’s husband was hanging around my apartment complex. The poor asshole thought that I was you. I told him to get lost or that I’d beat the shit out of him, and he had the nerve to just laugh at me. Can you believe that asshole?” Maverick could believe it. Adam was a pompous prick who didn’t give a shit about threats.

“Yeah, that sounds like him,” Maverick agreed. “Did you fill him in on the fact that you’re my twin?”

“Nope,” Steel admitted. “If he thinks I’m you, it might buy us some more time. Melody’s court case is soon, right?”

“Yes, in a few weeks,” Maverick said. He was both looking forward to it and dreading it all at the same time.

“Well, it doesn’t matter to me who Adam thinks that I am. If he thinks that I have Melody and that I’m you, he’ll keep coming back here and won’t look any further,” Steel said.

“But that puts you in danger,” Maverick insisted.

“I know that you don’t really believe this about me, but I can take care of myself. Uncle Sam has turned me into a killing machine, and I can use some of my acquired talents if need be.” Maverick knew that his brother had some wicked newly acquired skills taught to him by the government, but he never imagined Steel being turned into a “Killing Machine” as he put it.

“We’ll unpack that later,” Maverick said. “Right now, I need you to promise me that you won’t go and do anything stupid.”

Steel barked out his laugh into the other end of the call. “I can make you no such promise, brother,” he said. “What I can give you is time and space to get Melody to the courthouse for the hearing that will put this asshole away for a very long time.” Maverick could tell that he wasn’t going to change his brother’s mind about this one. Once Steel stuck his heels in, there was no stopping him.

“I appreciate the assist, but if things go south, I want you to call me, got it?” Maverick asked.
